A Complete Glossary of Dental Definitions
Oral SurgeryOral Surgery is the science of surgically removing diseases of the oral cavity (mouth) and the surrounding structures.
Another aspect of oral surgery is the replacing the oral and peri-oral structures (surrounding the mouth) that are lost because of disease or trauma. Oral surgery runs the range of extracting teeth all the way to working with the plastic surgeon on reconstructing the face when it is disfigured because of a disease process or trauma. Oral surgeons are the dental specialists that usually decide if a biopsy (sample of a suspected disease structure to determine beyond a question of a doubt if the structure is diseased and how to treat it) of an area needs to be done and then they are the ones who usually will do the biopsy and removal of the structure depending on the circumstances involved. |
